Staff Report
Eleven Walton ballcarriers combined to rush for 302 yards as the host Warriors cruised to a 53-8 Section Four Football Conference Division V victory over Unadilla Valley on Saturday.
Quinn Harby led the way with 87 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Austin Kilmer contributed 62 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the Warriors, who led, 40-8, at halftime.
“It’s a game we needed. We haven’t had one of these in a couple years,” Walton coach Jim Hoover said of the lopsided outcome. “We started subbing at the end of the second quarter and everyone got to play a lot.”
Defensively, Walton (4-2, 2-2) intercepted four passes, including two by Colin Adam. He also had a 5-yard rushing touchdown.
Sophomore Blake Hitt completed his lone pass, a 24-yarder to Jacob Wright. Hitt took over at quarterback for Trevor Zandt last week. Zandt suffered a broken collarbone in the Warriors’ 13-12 loss to Deposit/Hancock in Week 5. Zandt, who threw three touchdown passes in Walton’s 30-28 victory over Delhi two weeks ago, will not return this season.
“I feel so bad for Trevor,” Hoover said. “He’s just a junior and that’s the only good thing about it. He gets to come back next season for a whole new year.”
Walton suffered another injury Saturday as sophomore nose tackle Jeremy Hren was lost for the season with a broken leg.
“He started coming on really strong,” Hoover said of Hren. “He just got hit in a certain way. We’re starting so many 10th- and 11th-graders that we’ll just have to put another young guy in there. But (Jeremy) is 295 pounds. You don’t get too many 295-pound guys who come off the ball the way he does.”
Derek Mead and Logan Robinson also had touchdown runs for the Warriors, who’ll travel to Bainbridge-Guilford on Friday in what is likely a must-win if Walton is to qualify for the Section Four Class D playoffs.
“They seem to be getting better every week,” Hoover said of the 1-5 Bobcats. “There were a couple of games where their quarterback (Cole Webb) couldn’t play and that hurt. They have a runner there who has carried 30 times in a game. It’s typical Bainbridge-Guilford. They have three to four basic run plays and three to four pass plays, and they do them all very well.”
The playoff picture in Class D is anything but clear heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
“There are five schools within one or two points,” Hoover said of the point system that will determine the playoff fates of some teams. “I get the feeling they’ll be flipping a coin. There could be three or four teams tied and then they’ll have to start flipping coins.”
Hank DeGlee caught a 9-yard scoring pass from Lance Gage in the second quarter for UV (0-6).
Hoover has 297 victories.
